Dedicated to the memory of Wing Commander Nick Atkinson MBE RAF

This site is a tribute to Nick Atkinson, loving husband to Lycia, devoted father to Archie and Tilly, affectionate brother to James and Sarah, and stalwart friend to many.

Nick passed away at home on Sunday 16th January 2022 following a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. He was taken too soon and will be sorely missed by us all. He was a gentleman in every sense, gentle and kind, and a man of honour.

Thoughts

I will always associate Nick with the phrase “no worries” – he said it all the time. Back in 1987 (when I was on the same RAF Initial Supply Course as Nick at RAF Cranwell for 4 months) “no worries” was not in common usage, or at least not with me. I seem to remember before joining up, Nick had lived in Australia and had picked up this phrase; I found it really strange at first, but now 35 years on I regularly find myself saying “no worries” to others when something doesn’t go quite to plan but it really doesn’t matter and Nick often comes to mind when I say it. For 4 months I spent a lot of time with Nick and the others on the course – we lived, worked/studied and socialized together including a couple of trips to the mountains. We had a lot fun and Nick was very much part of that. We then went to various parts of the RAF and I only had one fleeting contact with Nick since. My guess is that “no worries” stayed in his vocabulary. I am really sorry to hear that Nick has passed away and I want to pass on my deepest sympathy to Nick’s wife, kids and wider family; I am sure that right now, quite naturally, you get worried and are very sad but over time, I hope that when at least some of those little annoying things that happen that risk of getting you down maybe by remembering Nick say “no worries” will be of comfort to you. Nick, a real true gent, many happy hours spent enjoying several sorties on the ocean amongst many other happy days and invariably a fine glass of malt. Cin cin old friend. Chris and Teresa.

Such a sad loss - a great boss and a great guy. Nick supported me on a tricky tour in Iraq, his input made my life infinitely easier. Fair winds Nick, my privilege to have served with you. My deepest condolences to the family.
